New York
City Metro
Overview:
The
New York City Metro area is home to about 18 million people, the largest urban
population in the US. About 13 million people live within the inner ring of
counties that surround Manhattan. This area has long been a magnet for
immigrants from all over the globe. It is common for many neighborhoods to be
dominated by a single ethnic group, thus giving each one its own cultural
identity. Much of the area’s rich and diverse culture can be traced back to the
cultures that immigrants bring to the city.
The
metro area also has a high degree of income disparity. This disparity is driven
by wage growth in high-income brackets, while wages have stagnated for the
middle and lower income brackets. The wages earned by the middle and lower
class often cannot keep up with the increasing costs of living, such as
housing, health care, child-care, and transportation. These rising costs are
especially difficult for poor residents to manage, and are major contributing
factors to the rise in the urban poverty rate and its already considerable
homeless population.
Ministry:
The teams will have
an outstanding opportunity to minister to those who have been forced into
poverty through economic circumstances, substance addiction, or mental and
physical disability. The groups inner city outreach may include opportunities
for children’s ministry, weekly community cookouts, prayer walks through
strategic neighborhoods, evangelism at local parks, feeding the homeless,
neighborhood car washes, and routine maintenance and construction around the
community.
Lodging for leaders and support staff: AIM
is intentional about finding housing that is separate from the
participants. The plan at this
time is to rent an apartment that will be in the suburbs of NJ. The Ministry
Coordinator couple, summer interns and support staff will be housed there all
summer long. On occasion
summer interns and support staff may be asked to be on a rotating schedule to
stay with the team in case of any emergencies.
