What Is Needed:
Many of the ways to help the residents here will be obvious. However,
we’ll spend time in listening prayer seeking the Lord’s guidance for
direction on less obvious things, such as who to pray for or when a
person is ready to accept Jesus as his or her savior.
You don’t have to travel halfway across the world to be a missionary.
What You Will Do:
You will have a chance to serve in multiple communities and minister to
the needs of these friendly, yet hurting people. You can connect with
the locals in the area by encouraging them and giving them a sense of
hope in their impoverished circumstances.
You’ll have the opportunity to share God’s love through activities such
as children’s ministry, door-to-door evangelism, connecting with the
residents of local nursing homes, prayer walks, and basic home repair
projects.
How You Can Pray:
– Pray that the people will be able to see Jesus for who He is, how He
loves them and holds them in His hand despite their circumstances.
– Pray that the Lord will prepare the hearts of those you will minister to so that they will be receptive to the Gospel.
– Pray that the Lord would give you an amazing compassion for the hurting and a passion for reaching those in Appalachia.
About This Location:
The economy of Appalachia traditionally rested on agriculture, mining,
timber, and manufacturing, but the loss of jobs to mechanization in
these industries have left much of Central and Southern Appalachia
unemployed and poverty-stricken. Education in the much of the area is
behind the rest of the nation, due to struggles in receiving government
funding and a population that often fails to see a practical need for
formal education. Today Appalachia has made efforts to join the economic
mainstream, but is still severely lagging behind the rest of the
nation.
Food and Lodging:
Food is prepared on site. Lodging will be provided. Sleeping bags, bedding, and towels are recommended.
